8 Series in Top Gear Challenge?!

  • The Top Gear team were spotted filmng in Market Harborough yesterday.
The witness (my son) mentioned that a maroon 8 Series was among the vehicles. He recons it may be for one of their challenge features.
Somehow I can't see it ending well.......

  • If the 8 comes off looking good, it could have a positive effect on used values, not least because it simply reminds people that they ever existed in the first place!

  • Ouch... this is not going to end good for the 8-series

I had hopes they´d compare it with the W140/C140 "Tank" model of the CL but they chose the later, so much nicer one. I can´t imagine that the C215 would be even remotely similar in price and with a build period of 1999-2006 they will be comparing wrinkly apples with freshly plucked oranges.

Even the hideous C140 Merc, compared to the E31 leaves an impression of a stately car with all the bits´n´bobs vs. an underpowered and comparatively flimsy car. The C215 is a completely different thing altogether and good looking to boot. There were numerous V12 engines for this car ranging from 367 to well above 600HP...

My guess is that this will be a first class flogging for the 8er - be prepared to laugh it away

The car with the visible registration # M23RBM is an M70 E31 and was first registered in the UK in August 1994 according to the DVLA. Given the colour, this is likely one of three RHD M70´s with a build date in 1994. I cannot take more decisive details from the picture. The car found by Lloyd indeed might be the same.

It appears that the car for sale (and possibly being used for the TopGear episode) is CB58067 - one of the last 6 RHD M70´s made. Maybe someone gets in touch with the seller and finds out whether this is indeed the case.

This car was equipped with rear axle kinematics and in theory can be sort of "quick" around the corners but seasoned Top Gear aficionados may easily imagine that the boys are more likely to giggle away at every "due to age" problem including AHK warning light and "limp home mode".

I can hear the verdict in the end containing the words "complete, utter and rubbish"

    Cheers

Yes, not really a fair comparison, unless they obtained the CL for similar money. This CL model was, for a long time a favourite of mine, but i recall, at least in the early days, seeing many at the dealers with all the dash and equipment stripped out to repair complex an unreliable electronics (Daimler-Chrysler era)

Being a 600, this one may have active supsension (ABC) to help it around the corners and the non-turbo, 5.8-litre V12, even though a compromised, 3-valve design- and less powerful than the previous version- is still more powerful (360 bhp) than the M70.

Anyway, we all know Clarkson is a Mercedes fan, so...

  • since the cars are not really from the same era, could it be a "new vs. old" battle?

"For X amount of money you get this MB, BUT at a fraction of that you get this older BMW... and how do they stock up against each other?
Can the 10 year older BMW match up to the MB?"

Could well be that the 850 is better value for money... or "bang for bucks" as they say.

If I misspelled a word it's because I'm Norwegian, so bear with me.

  • Recon they'll have been bought for similar money.
Recon the CL will walk it in most categories.

However, we all know that the E31 isn't objectively the best at this or that. It's not a question of which is the best car, but, as these guys often remark, which would you want to own?
Obviously all those reading here have already made their choice ;)

Well.. I have been looking at a CL AMG 63 (the sound is just amazing), but as an addition to the 850.... but I decided not to due to practicallity.
My next car will be a 4 door sedan, probably a 5-series or a 7-series.... then again I really don't want to sell the M3 either.

A well... guess I'll end up with 3 cars at some stage.

  • I am biased, but looking at that picture, I just wish they'd used a car with CSI bodykit instead - it would have beaten the Merc on looks, at least.

  • I suspect that after the panning it receives in almost every area except looks (even that is touch and go seeing as thers's no csi bodykit) the prices will actually drop further.

Like Reinhard says it's not a fair comparision given the age of the two cars.

It would be interesting, but unlikely, to see it round the track though - they should use it as their Reasonably Priced Car

Yes, of course, but at least they found one with not too many miles and that appears to be in reasonable condition.
