Hello and Help Please

  • Hi there,
I have started looking at possible examples over the last few weeks after drooling for over a year. This weekend I saw an Orient Blue 1997 840 ci sport with all the toys including EDC, rear blind, headlight washers and heated seats. The present plate is K5OHO, previously P63 VMR, Vin: WBAEF82060CC66444. It was previously for sale, I think at Hillcrest in Surrey last November. I was hoping someone new something about the car, perhaps previously owned by a member, I plan to buy but just had a few queries and would be grateful if anyone could help.
There is slight lag when you kick down which is not present in steptronic mode, ever so slight perhaps less than a second, is this normal?
Also the EDC shocks, are they all around the car, as the owner claims they only apply to the front of the car and not the back, hence he claims to have had the back ones replaced.
I do have more questions and I plan to do all the checks but any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks and regards.

  • A slight bit of lag is present in most auto's when they kick down, I wouldn't worry about it. Nice looking car there!

Just do a thorough check for rust on it.

  • I can't offer much help with the EDC but Brad's right there is a slight lag with the auto's, I've had my ECU remapped and it's improved the throttle response no end.

Have you had a look at the classifieds on pistonheads as there are some real nice examples there for sale at the moment, its certainly a buyers market.

On my 3rd 8 but my first V12

  • Thanks for the response guys.
It is reassuring with regards to the lag, will also look into the one on Pistonheads.
Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Looks like a nice example. Condensation in the drivers side front light it seems? I won't claim to know but is that an issue?
Nice though, good luck with the purchase if you go ahead. :top:

Wayne, what was the cost of having your ECU remapped and where did you get it done if you don't mind me asking?

You say it was worth it?

The remap was done by Gerry @ Phoenixmotorsport, IIRC it was around £300 and yes I think it was worth it, not only does it sharpen up the throttle response it changes gear a lot smoother, revs peak slightly higher before change, I swear its improved torque & BHP and also MPG has improved. Of course I haven't got written proof but I'm going to put the car on a dyno soon, which will hopefully show an improvement.
Overall well worth it in my eyes

Is it possible the rear ones went 'kaputt' and he replaced with standard due to the high cost of EDC parts ?

Yes, but that would be a bad idea in my opinion. You'd have a set of fixed shocks at one end, and variable ones at the other. So chances are they'll be mismatched when either the EDC is in sport mode or comfort mode, which can make the handling pretty unpredictable -- especially if the rears are much softer.

Personally, if replacing EDC shocks with non-EDC ones, I'd replace the lot of them with a matched set.

Is it possible the rear ones went 'kaputt' and he replaced with standard due to the high cost of EDC parts ?

That's what he did.It does apply to all 4 shocks.

  • Thanks once again guys, am doing a bit more research on the car as well as looking at some others, I think the EDC shocks were not replaced but he had some of the other suspension parts done. I have been advised to avoid EDC but how do you know when the EDC has failed? and even if it does fail if I replace all the EDC shocks with standard/specialist shocks will this be an issue?

  • Deep - I have been looking at the EDC shocks and specifically replacement or rebuild. As we all know the replacement by BMW is very expensive but all is not lost there is a company in Northants called Sportsline Suspension Ltd who will recn the EDC shocks for good money.

So don't be put off by all the negative comments there is always an alternitive, the difference in the car is somthing else :driving2::shock2:

  • Hi all, Thanks for all the help, I bought the above mentioned E31 yesterday drove it back home and loved it. I had the EDC checked out and it worked, fingers crossed it remains that way, only problem was once I tried it in steptronic mode the car reported a low beam failure and the drivers headlight went out! So now I have to source a replacement bulb, any advice would be welcome, I have to admit I am not very technically minded so I suspect I will be posting quite often, thanks to all.

P.S. I live in Uxbridge Middlesex so would be grateful if anyone can recommend some independents, previous owner had it looked after by Clifton Autos in Clapham.
