  • Is it possible to get a good price on insurance for an 840ci, as a second car, for occasional use, if the only NCD you have is on your main car?

My colleague has just bought a rather nice 840ci, which I have been trying to help him insure as a second car with limited mileage. However, I was amazed that all the brokers, such as Heritage, Adrian-Flux, Performance-Direct, have quoted around £700-£800, far from the region of £220 or so that other forum members here have managed to obtain. He is over 50, has 9-years NCD on his main car and a clean licence.

  • Hi Arnie

I have insured through Chaucer Direct for 3 or more years now and very happy with them in terms of flexibility and helpfulness.

I found them on confused.com and for my situation their quotes beat all others (including the so-called specialist/classic people).

  • Hi Arnie, just paid £320 ish with Hagerty (2 days ago), garaged (£410 if on driveway), 3000 miles a year, euro breakdown cover, car valued at £8000 and no need for NCD (which stays on my main car). If you decide to go with them quote my name just in case I get a discount! :top:

Sorry to chime in but do you mind telling how much (in time) you're allowed Euro travel?

  • Weird! Used to insure with Hagerty on a 'future classic' policy but they told me last year they no longer offer that. I'm with Norwich Union , unlimited mileage at £390.00 now through my local broker. Cant stand internet insurance outfits as they are fine until you need them

  • Thanks for all the replies, which I will share with my colleague. My own car is insured as a daily driver at £350 fully comprehensive with 10kmiles a year limit, but there is no pre-agreed value.

However, my colleague wanted an agreed value as the car has less than 10,000 miles on the clock and looks practically new. He's looking for about 3-4 k miles a year usage allowance but his only NCD is on his main car. (I think his main car is with Chaucer at around £300 a year.) I'd forgotten about Hagerty, so I'll mention that to him, but the others all quoted £700 -£800, which seemed a lot, although it could be because of a relatively high agreed-value. Esure quoted £360, but at "market value" and the problem is you need at least 4years NCD that can be transferred, so not possible as a second car in this case.

Anyway, I note that the figures here are £300 and upwards which is quite a bit of an increase from the older posts that mentioned prices around £200.

    Thanks again,

    arnie

  • Slightly swinging off E31 topic here but just to put these quotes into perspective, my son (17) has just had his lowest quote from over 50 insurers for a 2001 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2, standard with alarm, immobiliser and garaged with a full, clean licence..........

£4600.00!!!!! Top quote was £8750.00 with some refusing to insure.

    He is buying a scooter.

  • Insurance prices were covered on last night's Watchdog (should have been on Crimewatch with some of those quotes). An insurance company explained that they have increased premiums to recoup their costs from the harsh winter and the massive increase of criminal activity.

I was initially quoted £800 (as a second car) when I first bought the 840ci. I eventually found a broker (A-Plan in Farnham) that would apportion some of my no-claims to the second policy. I swapped the 740i's insurance over to them at the same time, the final cost for both cars was an increase of just £100 over what I was paying for the 740i.

This year the insurance has increased by 20% or so.

  • I insure three cars through Admiral Multi-car and i saved a lot on each policy, and I had shopped around a lot so I was pleased with it. It all depends on which profile of driver that company wants to target, something that's cheap for me could be pricey for someone else and vice-versa. I can no longer use the supermarket lot as my car is an ex-CAT C and I have two fault claims in the last 5 years. Either of these rules me out for Sainsburys who I was insured with before.

  • 1997 build, BMW 840Ci 4398cc, 82K on the clock.
2 named drivers: male aged 52, female aged 52.
Fully comp with legal cover and protected NCD.
Up to 10,000 miles per annum.
    Declared value "£5K to £30K".
Max NCD of 60% for 5 years.
Annual premium: £348.98 (that's three hundred forty-eight sterling)
On-line through swiftcover, part of AXA.

Edited to add: Just realised that mine is actually a second car with its own NCD history, so not 100% applicable to the original post. Still good value, though, as they don't treat it as a "classic" or special: hence the high limits on mileage and value.

  • Grey hair has at least one advantage!
Last year I paid £180, £10K agreed value with Hagerty.
This year it jumped to £220 - still excellent value (although I've lost one of my NCB histories).

  • This post is NOT about how much your insurance costs you!! more over how do you insure a second car when your NCD applies to the 1st car:banghead:

Sorry to be APITA but threads that wander off topic do my head in:rofl:
